This year dye pot day is on Thursday July 17 at Jean & Bob Breitzmann’s. We hope to have all the dye pots ready to go by 9:00 AM. Come when you can. Bring a bag lunch if you like. Leave when you run out of fun.
If it’s not raining these are the natural dyes we will have to play with. With the exception of indigo, all the dyes work much better when a mordant is applied first. If you have mordant, protein fiber uses alum, cellulose fiber works better with tannin and then alum. If you don’t have mordant it will be available here. It will just take longer.
Indigo: if you plan to dye with Indigo bring that yarn soaking in water.
Cochineal: Red/Pink, from insects.
Madder: Orange, from plant roots.
Pomegranate: Yellow, from fruit husks
Black Walnut: Tan/Brown, nuts donated by Laramie
Logwood: Purple/Black, from wood. donated by Linda
Lac: Red, from insects. New this year, donated by Mo.
Brazil wood: Red, from wood. New this year, donated by Mo.
Cutch: Tan/Brown from wood, New this year, donated by Mo.
Elderberry: Blue/Purple smashed berries, New this year, donated by Cindy
If it is raining I we will have fewer dyes set up in the garage.
Please rsvp to Bob so he can better plan for how much dye stock to have ready.
