Video program on Andean Textiles—February 15
|
|
Join us for a special viewing of our new ATA video “Textile Traditions of the Peruvian Highlands.” Narrated by well-known doubleweave author and teacher, Jennifer Moore, this visual presentation will give you an up-close look at Peru’s extraordinary indigenous textiles and the skilled artisans who create them.
The video highlights weavers, dyers, knitters, and spinners who are cooperative members of the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco (CTTC) as they work to preserve and revitalize their traditional textile arts—including some techniques dating back to the Incas. During the presentation, you’ll learn about the Andean way of spinning, dyeing, and knitting, as well as the tools to create belts, bands, textiles, woven edges, and skirt borders. Through stunning imagery, you’ll also gain insight into the weaving of doubleweave, ikat, tapestry, and discontinuous and supplementary warps.
The hour-long program will take place on Tuesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. (ET) via Zoom. Proceeds from the $10 registration fee will go to further support revitalization of Andean textile traditions.
“Textile Traditions of the Peruvian Highlands” was created by Jennifer Moore and Ercil Howard-Wroth. Jennifer holds an MFA in fibers. Her work, which explores mathematical relationships and musical patterns in doubleweave, has been featured in exhibitions and publications throughout the world. Ercil, a long-time educator, teaches fiber arts to adults and children. Her current work brings together her love for traditional societies and her twenty-plus years of working in the textile arts. Both Jennifer and Ercil serve on the ATA board of directors.
We hope to see you February 15 as we share the inspiring story of Peruvian textile traditions.
Don’t miss this informative presentation and your chance to visually experience one of the world’s most inspiring and unique textile cultures.

Medina Spinning and Weaving Guild Presents
Deflected Double Weave with Natalie Drummond “Where the Shuttle Meets the Shed”
Friday March 25, 2022, 9 am – 4 pm and
Saturday March 26, 2022, 10 am – 4 pm
Medina Presbyterian Church 5020 Burgundy Bay Blvd. Medina, OH 44256
Workshop Overview:
Weave deflected double weave samples on your pre-warped loom using various fibers and setts. Explore selvedge methods “where the shuttle meets the shed” for beautiful finishing. Discuss various finishing methods with and without agitation. Cut samples off loom and hand wash prior to day 2. Dis- cuss and compare hand washed samples – movement/deflection vs differential shrinkage. Explore a simple treadle OR tie-up change to weave a scarf with the remainder of your warp (or sample).
Class size limited to 10-12.
Materials: Warped 8 shaft loom, 2-4 shuttles, yarns on materials list (18/2 Zephyr, Tencel or Bamboo), SOAK for washing samples, notebook, pen and pencil. Natalie says a 4-shaft 6 treadle loom can be used. There would be less design possibilities, but lots of color/fiber possibilities.

Winter Newsletter is posted here
Study Group meets Thursday, December 2
Miriam is our host. Meet at 10:00 am.
Let’s share our progress on pieces inspired by our visit to the art museum.
Two Reminders about dues and upcoming winter newsletter deadline
December 1 gives very short notice. And we’ve barely had time during and betwixt holidays. Please send newsletter materials, especially items of our doings and program notes for the upcoming CWG year.
No doubt that photos of your projects, a new technique or yarn you are trying, or a weaving reference book you have discovered will be welcome. Or even an essay about your weaving adventures, discoveries, or compatriots. Perhaps a quandary that you would like help with. A report about the outcomes of our sale will be welcome.
In earlier discussions about the foibles of our weaving work might fit into a new column based on Penelope’s weaving tactics——you know, the part where she weaves and unweaves. We all have stories about our version so please send yours.
Contribute directly to Nancy or to newsletter@cuyahogaweaversguild.com
If you haven’t already done so, NOW is the time to send your MEMBERSHIP dues.
