Cranbrook Mourns the Passing of Jack Lenor Larsen

Last week, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Lenor Larsen (Fiber ’51). Considered one of the most influential and prolific textile designers of the 20th century, Larsen explored both modern style and historical methods in his practice.

In a 1998 interview with The New York Times, he said, “I like ancient techniques and the cutting edge. The extremes are always more interesting than the middle.”

At the University of Washington, Larsen was a teaching assistant to Cranbrook Academy of Art alumnus Ed Rossbach, who suggested Larsen continue his studies at the Academy. He received a scholarship at Rossbach’s recommendation and completed his graduate course work in only nine months, graduating from Cranbrook with his MFA in 1951.

In 1952, he opened a studio in New York City and went on to shape the textile design of postwar American homes and workplaces, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, Eero Saarinen’s Miller House, and Pan American Airlines. “First and foremost, Jack Lenor Larsen was a maker. His use of traditional hand techniques and materials that he adapted into innovative technologies and applications was transformative,” said Susan R. Ewing, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art. “His profound leadership and critical vision for contemporary crafts especially impacted the educational and outreach missions of the American Craft Council and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. His legacy will continue to resonate and inspire a contemporary generation of 21st-century makers, educators, and companies. We at Cranbrook celebrate his global influence, inspiration, and contributions to our shared ideals.”

His textiles are in the permanent collections of Cranbrook Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre, which gave him a one-man retrospective in 1981.

He is profiled in the upcoming publication, With Eyes Opened: Cranbrook Academy of Art Since 1932 and will have work featured in the exhibition of the same name opening at Cranbrook Art Museum in June 2021.

Hilly’s Gift

When Jean got the call, we went over to pick-up what was left of Hilly Marcus’ weaving adventures. Hilly had already moved, but her daughter Ellen was there to help lift, carry and load the many boxes of books and yarn. Knowing it would be months of storage before the world thawed enough to have the sale, we were openly relieved that the looms were already gone. Ellen explained that they hadn’t sold the looms, they had given them away. The looms had passed to deserving weaving students through a contest within the Cleveland Institute of Art. Ellen let CIA create the actual contest and pick the winners. She knew her mother’s looms would find fine, new homes; but that was all she could say. More than a year later, I got the rest of the story from the Executive Director of the Praxis Fiber Workshop. During my initial exploration of the facility, one boat shuttle of the many moored neatly on the shuttle shelf caught my eye. Clearly across one end, in what had obviously been a very permanent marker, was a boldly written, “Hilly Marcus”. I asked Jessica Pinsky if she knew anyone who knew anything about the contest. It turned out that she knew the other half of the story better than anyone else I could have queried. Jessica had been a technical specialist in the CIA fiber department during that time, and she was part of the group that organized the contest and decided which students won. She told me where they went, and with whom. The Cranbrook is now loved by a lady named Natalie who rents a small space at Praxis to keep the big loom safe and set-up. A gentleman named Matt has the Harrisville in his Parma studio. Both young people are part of the CIA alumni show “Close Connections”; August 7 through September 25 at Praxis. Our own Debbie Silver is also part of the exhibit. In late 2012, when CIA announced it’s elimination of the fiber department as a singular focus of study, Jessica Pinsky started planning Praxis. Her vision saved all the CIA looms from the waste of extended storage or the complete loss from casual discard. I think Hilly would be proud to know that her love and passion have passed into the next generation of fiber artists, and pleased that her gift was received and embraced by such creative hands.

Praxis Fiber Workshop opening day report

For the Praxis Fiber Workshop Open House in early June of 2015, Darcy and I went together. The youth and enthusiasm of their artistic souls is revitalizing an area once abandoned and mourned as dead. We shared the mature feeling that it is always better to explore new vistas and questionable neighborhoods with a buddy. It turned out that the only thing we had to fear were the road craters that created challenging conditions between here and there. We parked on the street with no troubles.

There was a little fanfare. A few bright balloons marked the location, and live music spilled out the front door. We walked past people scattered on the sidewalk and the front stoop carefully unwrapping indigo tie dye t-shirts. Just inside the front window, a man played guitar on the left side of the stage while a woman played a 4-harness jack loom to the right.

The entry quickly opened into a comfortable gallery space with a TAA show presenting a wide range of fiber talents. I made sure to absorb and enjoy the offerings of so talented a group, but people I recognized kept assuring me that I really had to go out back. I was determined to explore in a leisurely and logical fashion, but I promised them that I would get there.

I passed through the door into the middle space. To the left was a shiny spacious dye zone with everything one could covet in equipment. A crowd gathered in an orderly fashion to wait or work on their own free artisan t-shirt created from their own creative hands.

Not being much of a t-shirt person, my gaze was drawn right and captured by a very large room filled with mostly large looms. Countermarches formerly used at CIA line up like an army waiting to ride into the next wave of discovery.

A small zone of jack looms is tucked in toward the back. There are large empty rooms on the far side suitable and available for private studio rental.

The emptiness and openness quickly became foreign and uncomfortable, so I moved back to the main area and rejoiced in the joy of seeing so many looms in one place without being at my own home.

I passed equipment storage and a cozy library nook before heading out back as suggested. They had opened the overhead door into the back lot to allow easy access to the large felted creation growing over a large blue tarp spread out over the ground. It was pure art in both its form and function.

The process started with a table piled high with many colors of wool roving. Some attempt had been made to separate and sort the colors, but the choices were numerous enough to force some overlap in the piles.

A bright blue caught my eye. I pulled off a healthy hand full from the sliver and started to stretch and thin it. When I was satisfied with its diaphanous nature, I slipped off my shoes, choose a spot and placed my bit of blue. I added a squirt of soap and started to introduce the sudsy fibers into the work with my bare feet. Many others were dancing over the wet and wooly bits to coerce it all into one cohesive cloth. I was happy to add my bit of color to their opening endeavor. I left with a smile and exceptionally clean toes.

Classes are available to satisfy all the stages of a fiber-focused education. Those big open rooms are available for private rental, as is the dye zone. The staff is young, enthusiastic, and obviously competent. They are friendly, warm, welcoming, and well trained.

We will arrange a tour for our group, but it is located close by and worth a visit anytime. With the range of classes they are offering, you might not want to wait. Check out their website here.
