CWG Korean Couture follow up resources

September 23, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

This comes from Laura Martin:
A follow up with resources mention during her talk or in conversation at lunch afterwards.
Hi!
It was so great to spend time with everyone yesterday. Thanks for inviting me and for giving me lunch! Here are a few follow-up items from some of the things we talked about. I hope you will be able to share this info with the group that was there.
Books
Silk: A World History by Aarathi Prasad (William Morrow, 2024). “Worms’ Work” a review by Jenny Uglow is in The New York Review of Books, 19 September 2024 issue, pp 54-55.
Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years — Women, Cloth and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber (Norton 1994) and Prehistoric Textiles: The Development of Cloth in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages with Special Reference to the Aegean, also by Barber (Princeton U Press, 1992)
Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel (Basic Books, 2021)
Sheila Hicks
The Ford Foundation textile installation IS made of linen! Read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/06/arts/sheila-hickss-tapestries-to-again-hang-at-ford-foundation.html
Aimee Lee
Website: https://aimeelee.net/;
Several of us were talking about this recent publication about a Wari textile: The Royal Inca Tunic: A Biography of an Andean Masterpiece by Andrew James Hamilton (Princeton U Press, 2024)
And continuing with one more:
And I now remember that someone asked me for the name of the detective series set in Paris and featuring a detective who is always wearing thrift store vintage couture! It’s the Aimee Leduc series by novelist Cara Black. There are now 21 books in the series and they are best read in order. The list is available at one of my favorite websites: Stop, You’re Killing Me!: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/
Happy Equinox and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Laura

There are a couple options nearby for those interested in lunch afterwards, so also note if you are interested in lunch.  Beachwood Ballroom is right down the street, as is Citizen Pie or a little further on Lakeshore is Beach Club Bistro (which opens at 1) but it would be helpful to give them a heads-up to know how many to expect.

October Program invitation for October 14 and 15. Both are virtual.

October 8, 2020 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Plan on watching the Cleveland Museum of Art virtual program on Wednesday October 14 at 12:00 noon. You can find the program on the museum’s web site.  It is a Close Looking at a Distance (CLAD) program featuring the Korean Embroidery exhibit.  This ‘field trip” will be virtual.
Follow this with our Zoom meeting to discuss and expand on our virtual visit with the museum’s staff and share our personal experiences with embroidery and/or Korean textiles. The Zoom meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 15 at 11:30 am (our regular meeting day and time).  Once again, be on the look-out for an invitation from Lynne.
About CLAD–
Cleveland Museum of Art has  a program called Close Looking at a Distance-CLAD- and on Wed Oct 14 at 12 Noon, they are having a Virtual Event About the Korean Embroidery exhibit that will be closing at the end of this month. It is easy to access on a computer.
    Go to cma.org/events/virtual-events
Look for the pop up for Close Looking at a Distance
There is data about times and an introduction.
Scroll down to Join the Conversation and follow the prompts.
From CMA’s website:

Close Looking at a Distance: Scrutinizing the Stitches

Wednesday, October 14, 12:00 p.m.

What can a wedding gown, liberally decorated and lovingly patched and repaired, tell us about the culture, values, and artisans from which it emerged? In this CLAD session, join host Key Jo Lee and curator of Korean art Sooa McCormick for a guided look at an intricately embroidered garment from the CMA’s permanent collection, currently on view in the exhibition Gold Needles: Embroidery Arts from Korea.

Wedding Gown, late 1800s. Korea, Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). Silk: satin weave; embroidery; paper edging on neck and sleeves; 114.3 x 174 cm. The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Worcester R. Warner Collection, 1918.552
Upcoming exhibit of interest to the guild is:
A new exhibit in the Textile Gallery will be coming November 22 featuring the textiles of the Guna, an indigenous territory in Panama. Think Mola!

A note about visiting in person:

The museum is open with the normal distancing and masking restrictions if anyone does want to try to see the Korean exhibit before it closes. Check their web site for details.
