Weaving and other fiber-based fun for 45 years and counting
The Fall newsletter is now posted. Find it under the MEMBERS tab, then Newsletter Archive.
Labor Day and September 1 newsletter deadline fall on the same day. Be sure to send your submissions anywhere near that date, as your holiday weekend may be happily busy. How did Labor Day get here so soon?
Please send newsletter materials, especially items of summer doings and program notes for the upcoming CWG year. A President’s letter, program notes, study group ideas and member’s news will all be welcome.
No doubt that photos of your projects, a new technique or yarn you are trying, or a weaving reference book you have discovered will be welcome. Or even an essay about your weaving adventures, discoveries, or compatriots. Perhaps a quandary that you would like help with.
In earlier discussions about the foibles of our weaving work might fit into a new column based on Penelope’s weaving tactics——you know, the part where she weaves and unweaves. We all have stories about our version so please send yours.

This year dye pot day is on Thursday July 17 at Jean & Bob Breitzmann’s. We hope to have all the dye pots ready to go by 9:00 AM. Come when you can. Bring a bag lunch if you like. Leave when you run out of fun.
If it’s not raining these are the natural dyes we will have to play with. With the exception of indigo, all the dyes work much better when a mordant is applied first. If you have mordant, protein fiber uses alum, cellulose fiber works better with tannin and then alum. If you don’t have mordant it will be available here. It will just take longer.
Indigo: if you plan to dye with Indigo bring that yarn soaking in water.
Cochineal: Red/Pink, from insects.
Madder: Orange, from plant roots.
Pomegranate: Yellow, from fruit husks
Black Walnut: Tan/Brown, nuts donated by Laramie
Logwood: Purple/Black, from wood. donated by Linda
Lac: Red, from insects. New this year, donated by Mo.
Brazil wood: Red, from wood. New this year, donated by Mo.
Cutch: Tan/Brown from wood, New this year, donated by Mo.
Elderberry: Blue/Purple smashed berries, New this year, donated by Cindy
If it is raining I we will have fewer dyes set up in the garage.
Please rsvp to Bob so he can better plan for how much dye stock to have ready.
Details from CWG May meeting and presentation.
JoEllen’s presentation triggered interest in the artists she shared.
Here is a PDF with the works and artists listed:
Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women was a recent exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. It features 33 works of fiber art during the period of 1918-2004. It was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum with the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. JoEllen was fortunate to view this exhibit in January, and has created a presentation to share photos of this exhibit and more.
