Cancelation of CWG field trip

November 20, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

After looking at the weather forecast for our field trip to the American Coverlet Museum, we will be rescheduling for sometime in the spring.
I think we could get there is good shape, but coming home in the dark through the Allegheny mountains with wind and snow is not something I want to attempt. Jean and I take that route when we visit our son and his family in Virginia.
Aside from my seeing the coverlets now on display, part of what I had been looking forward was seeing how each of you responded when you saw them. I do hope that we can reschedule the trip and have a good turnout.
I realize that this means we will not have a Guild meeting in November, but we did have a very productive study group earlier this month, and we are all lined up for our Holiday Luncheon on Thursday December 19 at Jessie Adler’s house, starting at 11:30. Please bring a dish to share, and any show and tell you may have.
Bob

CWG November meeting–a survey of interest

October 22, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Hi All

I got through to speak to someone at the coverlet museum today.

I have a “tentative” date setup with them for Thursday November 21. The normal date for our monthly meeting. We would drive over in the morning and drive back in the afternoon. It is about a 3.5 hour drive.
Please respond to let me know if you would like to attend  and if you would be willing to drive. Jean and I will drive and we can fit two others in our car. We would take the toll road so you would need an EZ pass and I expect the guild to cover the mileage.
I think I included everyone in this email who was at the meeting last week.
Please respond quickly to Bob at robert.breitzmann@gmail.com

CWG Korean Couture follow up resources

September 23, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

This comes from Laura Martin:
A follow up with resources mention during her talk or in conversation at lunch afterwards.
Hi!
It was so great to spend time with everyone yesterday. Thanks for inviting me and for giving me lunch! Here are a few follow-up items from some of the things we talked about. I hope you will be able to share this info with the group that was there.
Books
Silk: A World History by Aarathi Prasad (William Morrow, 2024). “Worms’ Work” a review by Jenny Uglow is in The New York Review of Books, 19 September 2024 issue, pp 54-55.
Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years — Women, Cloth and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber (Norton 1994) and Prehistoric Textiles: The Development of Cloth in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages with Special Reference to the Aegean, also by Barber (Princeton U Press, 1992)
Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel (Basic Books, 2021)
Sheila Hicks
The Ford Foundation textile installation IS made of linen! Read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/06/arts/sheila-hickss-tapestries-to-again-hang-at-ford-foundation.html
Aimee Lee
Website: https://aimeelee.net/;
Several of us were talking about this recent publication about a Wari textile: The Royal Inca Tunic: A Biography of an Andean Masterpiece by Andrew James Hamilton (Princeton U Press, 2024)
And continuing with one more:
And I now remember that someone asked me for the name of the detective series set in Paris and featuring a detective who is always wearing thrift store vintage couture! It’s the Aimee Leduc series by novelist Cara Black. There are now 21 books in the series and they are best read in order. The list is available at one of my favorite websites: Stop, You’re Killing Me!: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/
Happy Equinox and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Laura

CWG Fall Newsletter News……………..and the blues

September 14, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

CWG Fall Newsletter is ready, but experiencing problems with digital delivery and posting on the website.  Boo! Hiss!

Here are two options for members:

  1. Notifying us that you’d like it emailed to you to read and/or copy.
  2. Notifying us that you’d like a copy printed and delivered at the September meeting/field trip at the Cleveland Museum of Art on September 19.  Member picks up the newsletter there.  Please designate either B and W, or color.  (You have to know which one will be more economical for the Guild treasury.)

Please select and write to newsletter@cuyahogaweaversguild.com

Apologies for this delay and extra nonsense.
