CWG Korean Couture follow up resources

September 23, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

This comes from Laura Martin:
A follow up with resources mention during her talk or in conversation at lunch afterwards.
Hi!
It was so great to spend time with everyone yesterday. Thanks for inviting me and for giving me lunch! Here are a few follow-up items from some of the things we talked about. I hope you will be able to share this info with the group that was there.
Books
Silk: A World History by Aarathi Prasad (William Morrow, 2024). “Worms’ Work” a review by Jenny Uglow is in The New York Review of Books, 19 September 2024 issue, pp 54-55.
Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years — Women, Cloth and Society in Early Times by Elizabeth Wayland Barber (Norton 1994) and Prehistoric Textiles: The Development of Cloth in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages with Special Reference to the Aegean, also by Barber (Princeton U Press, 1992)
Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World by Virginia Postrel (Basic Books, 2021)
Sheila Hicks
The Ford Foundation textile installation IS made of linen! Read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/06/arts/sheila-hickss-tapestries-to-again-hang-at-ford-foundation.html
Aimee Lee
Website: https://aimeelee.net/;
Several of us were talking about this recent publication about a Wari textile: The Royal Inca Tunic: A Biography of an Andean Masterpiece by Andrew James Hamilton (Princeton U Press, 2024)
And continuing with one more:
And I now remember that someone asked me for the name of the detective series set in Paris and featuring a detective who is always wearing thrift store vintage couture! It’s the Aimee Leduc series by novelist Cara Black. There are now 21 books in the series and they are best read in order. The list is available at one of my favorite websites: Stop, You’re Killing Me!: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/
Happy Equinox and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

CWG Fall Newsletter News……………..and the blues

September 14, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

CWG Fall Newsletter is ready, but experiencing problems with digital delivery and posting on the website.  Boo! Hiss!

Here are two options for members:

  1. Notifying us that you’d like it emailed to you to read and/or copy.
  2. Notifying us that you’d like a copy printed and delivered at the September meeting/field trip at the Cleveland Museum of Art on September 19.  Member picks up the newsletter there.  Please designate either B and W, or color.  (You have to know which one will be more economical for the Guild treasury.)

Please select and write to newsletter@cuyahogaweaversguild.com

Apologies for this delay and extra nonsense.

Fall newsletter deadline is approaching—Sunday, September 1 or………

September 1, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Fall newsletter deadline is really coming–let’s say September 4 and 5 is realistic after the Labor Day weekend has settled.

Please send newsletter materials, especially items of summer doings and program notes for the upcoming CWG year. A President’s letter, program notes, study group ideas and member’s profile will all be welcome.

No doubt that photos of your projects, a new technique or yarn you are trying,  or a weaving reference book you have discovered will be welcome. Or even an essay about your weaving adventures, discoveries, or compatriots. Perhaps a quandary that you would like help with.

In earlier discussions about the foibles of our weaving work might fit into a new column based on Penelope’s weaving tactics——you know, the part where she weaves and unweaves.  We all have stories about our version so please send yours.

Look! Congratulations are in order. Bob Breitzmann and People’s Choice Award

July 29, 2024 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Complex Weavers recognizes Bob Breitzmann’s Letting Go

“My goal was to visualize the release from letting go of conflict. The design line was chosen to create the general form. The tie-up was chosen to create bands of color with a sense of depth, and appearance of light coming from above. The weft gradient from a light blue at the top to a dark navy at the bottom reinforces the effect of light shining from above. The warp gradient from purple to gold to purple brings focus to the center with cares falling away. The rose path network was chosen to create the gauze brush strokes.”

The Details:

Techniques:

Warp and weft are hand dyed gradients, each with 25 interleaved colors. Structure is a network draft with a 6-high rose path initial for the threading and the treadling.

Dimensions:

27.625 x 27.625 x 0.75

Materials:

16/2 Hemp

Loom:

32 Shaft Louet
