Cuyahoga Weavers Guild

Weaving and other fiber-based fun for 45 years and counting

Leslie has a question about EGLFC

May 31, 2023 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Chautauqua Institution
I’m going are you?
It’s hard for me to fly with a loom so I signed up for Felting with Renate Wade Moskowitz who supposibly fantastic! The problem is that so far only 3 people have enrolled so I hey might cancel the class. Would any of you be interested? CWG has had a good showing at EGLFC in the past because it’s a smaller conference, only a 2 1/2 hour drive, always at Chautauqua Institution, and always in October over Columbus Day weekend. I’d love to see all of you and my long term Chautauqua friends. Whaddayousay?
Leslie

May18, 2023 meeting will be at Warrensville Library, 11:30am. Do bring Show-&-Tell as there will be little opportunity in the prior two months to share our works. We will vote on next year’s officers.  Please consider serving CWG as an officer, program committee, or other capacity.

11:30 to 12:00 is brown-bag and social time. Meeting and show and tell begins at 12:00.

To those interested in the 2023- 2024 Study Group challenge, please bring your ideas. This is an ideal time to select and plan.

An offer of a Glimakra tapestry loom

May 4, 2023 By Nancy 4 Comments

This came via the website’s comments.  Anyone interested?

“DONATION
I have a Gilmakra upright tapestry loom that I’d like to donate, especially to an educational program. I find that I’m really not using it so want to pass it on. I have pictures showing the whole loom and a few more showing details if you are interested.

It could be used for a collaborative work or someone who wanted to develop their “free-form” weaving. The parts slip together and are held in place by pegs. It quickly ( 5 min. 2 people, 10 min. one) assembles and disassembles and is easy to store and and transport in most any car. quickly ( 5 min. 2 people, 10 min. one) assembles and disassembles and is easy to store and and transport in most any car. Assembled, it is about 40” wide and 5’tall. The active weaving area is about 3×3 but you can weave yards long pieces if you like.

If you are not interested any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!”

Here’s our mission.

BOTANICAL

In May, Study group gathered for the finale of the year and harnessed the concept for our coming year Study topic, Botanical. pastedGraphic.png

Whether you choose:

a fiber (i.e., hemp, cotton, bamboo, linen,)

a dye (i.e., indigo, madder)

a subject (i.e., weave a pictorial, tapestry, a color flow as in botanical subject)

a botanical object to weave (i.e., a three-dimensional object maybe, or felt?)

or a combination

pastedGraphic_1.png

The choices are vast, there being almost no restrictions. Using imaginations and all the resources we have available to us; this should prove to be a wonderful project. And exceedingly interesting for our exhibit that will be on display in April.

Bring your current work, questions, show and tell.

How to be a moderator….Joan’s experience

March 26, 2023 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Your CWG newsletter editor didn’t add this to the spring newsletter.   Apologies.

It is good news from Joan Horwich:

I was the moderator for a virtual MAFA class led by Mary Mandarino this past weekend.  The class title was “making woven chenille”.    Mary explained both how to create the chenille as well as how to weave a chenille rug.  The chenille is woven in a plain weave structure using a variety of threads to make up the weft.  After weaving the cloth, it is  removed from the loom and cut into chenille strips. These strips are then used as the weft to create a beautiful lofty rug.  I found this to be very interesting and something out of the ordinary.  Hopefully, I will have a chance to weave a chenille rug in the near future.
