Drawloom class opportunity

May 10, 2013 By Nancy Curtiss Leave a Comment

An opportunity to take the Vavstuga drawloom class has made itself available to me, and I will be taking the class the week of June 3rd. Susan Conover tells me that they have one more opening for this week; would any of you like to join me? She told me that for this class it is not necessary to have taken the Vavstuga Basics class – that if you are an “experienced weaver” you can also register.

This is the only Drawloom class in the country with 6-7 different drawlooms to play on, and the class is very different from the Basics. No loom dressing! Just sit and play all day! Plus good meals and weaverly camaraderie! Here is the website.  Please contact Vavstuga directly to register.

I will already be driving to MA – it would be fun to have a car mate! If you choose to take the class and want a ride, you can e-mail me at ncurtiss@truthforlife.org or call me at 330.995.3811. I would need to know by Friday, May 31st so that we could make plans.  Susan said that if she doesn’t hear from any of the Ohio contingent, she will be posting the opening next week (5/13) on Monday or Tuesday to the Complex Weavers Group and to other weaving boards.  I hope you can join me!

Carol James visits May Spinners meeting

May 3, 2013 By Darcy Leave a Comment

Carol James, our delightful instructor at last year’s sprang workshop, will be visiting our sister group, the Cuyahoga Spinners Guild, on Friday, May 24th, to display her replica of George Washington’s Revolutionary War sash. Carol’s replica is such a true recreation of the original that the caretakers at Mount Vernon had to check to make sure the original was still where they left it when they first viewed Carol’s work. Read all the details at the spinners blog and please join us to see this wonderful piece of history as it makes its way to Mount Vernon.

Ply-splitting workshop with Debbie Swan, Thursday, May 16th

April 9, 2013 By Darcy Leave a Comment

Join us on Thursday, May 16th, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, for a day of ply-splitting with Debbie Swan.

Have you seen the adorable little baskets Debbie Swan has been whipping up? Debbie has been working through Linda Hendrickson‘s book on ply-spliting, and she has made some adorable little baskets. Debbie has agreed to share what she’s figured out with the guidance and blessing of Linda. Projects are provided and include instructions for one sweet little basket, cord to work with, and the nifty little tool required to make it all intertwine.

We’ll meet early (9:00 am, sharp!) and stay late in our regular meeting space (Church of the Savior, 2537 Lee Road, Cleveland Heights, OH), and the addition of so many of us with sharp tools might keep the business meeting in between short and well behaved. Sign up now for a fun day with Debbie!

$45 covers it all for members and non-members alike, materials included. Send check to Jean Jackson to hold your space (address will be given upon registration).

April 5, 2013 By Nancy Leave a Comment

Check out the Cleveland Museum of Art’s write-up about member Victoria Johnson-Parratt and her prize-winning entry in the Project Tunic activity associated with the Wari exhibit that ended in January. You can still see this piece live on exhibit at the library until the end of the show, and it is definitely worth the trip. We’re so proud to have Victoria as one of our own.

During this workshop we will create our own story designs using local mud on cotton and other natural fiber cloth. Gain an appreciation of the Mali culture while we have some local fun!

  2. Small container or two of local dirt/mud/clay (interesting colors?!)
  3. Several paint brushes you don’t mind destroying (hardware and/or craft store variety) good ones to have: stiff bristle, fine tip, wide flat – instructor will have a supply for use if you don’t have any; sponge brushes are not recommended
  4. 2-20 disposable cups (9 oz. clear plastic is good) or yogurt cups w/ lids
  5. Spoons or stirring rods for mixing mud
  6. Masking tape, any width or several widths
  7. 2-3 rolls paper towels
  8. 2-3 days worth of newspapers and / or cardboard to put between layers of cloth
  9. Apron
  10. Optional: mortar/pestle; watercolor paper, sketch/watercolor paper, pencil; straightedge; stencils; scissors; stamps and flat dish to fit stamps; mordant suitable for your cloth; plastic containers (e.g. butter tubs with lids) and/or baggies for sharing/storing of extra muds/dirts; music to share (CDs)
